Kalmar's full-service maintenance helps Transnet succeed

Maintenance is one of the pillars supporting our operations, and having skills supplied by a third party on a contract basis ensures consistency. Siya Mhlaluka, General Manager, Transnet Port Terminals, Eastern Cape Region

The solution Container terminals

Comprehensive maintenance service maximises equipment availability, safety and customer-service quality at fast-growing African terminal.

Ensuring productivity at Port of Ngqura, South Africa

The challenge

Port of Ngqura is Africa’s deepest container terminal and a hub for cargo bound for South Africa, the rest of the continent and south-south traffic. This fast-growing port is setting the benchmark for productivity on the African continent. The harsh weather conditions also present challenges, with maintenance having to be carried out in wind, rain and harsh sunlight, and at ground temperatures reaching as high as 40 °C.

The solution

With Kalmar responsible for frontline people management, TPT has more time to focus on its core business. The 22 Kalmar rubber-tyred gantry cranes are linked to TPT’s SAP Plant Maintenance Programme, allowing the Kalmar maintenance team to predict maintenance and service requirements for each machine. This means the team can ensure the availability of equipment, spares, supplies and people in order to minimise downtime.

The results

The Kalmar team consistently exceeds the target of 98.6 percent availability of the fleet it maintains. TPT and Kalmar monitor the availability of all the equipment on a daily basis and hold regular meetings to resolve potential problems. The partnership allows TPT to focus on its core business and on providing professional and efficient customer service. Ngqura has also achieved more than three million work hours without a lost time injury.
