A vision for a sustainable future

"In 2060, all ports run on renewable energy with zero carbon emissions, and their productivity has tripled compared to 2013." This is the mission of the Kalmar Port 2060 initiative, which sets out a vision for a sustainable future for the cargo handling industry.

Sustainability is integral to modern terminal operations. Sustainable technology implementation begins during the terminal planning, product development and design stages.


Enhancing our customers' sustainability

We support sustainable development by providing our customers with sustainable solutions. Our solutions help customers reduce fuel consumption and emissions, optimise cargo flows and cut overall operational costs as well as improve safety and equipment availability.

For example, the new Kalmar heavy-range electric forklift generates zero emissions and cuts energy costs by 75 per cent compared to an equivalent diesel forklift. Kalmar hybrid straddle and shuttle carriers consume up to 40 per cent less fuel and reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by over 50 tons per year per machine when compared to traditional diesel-electric designs. Automation also brings energy savings, as unmanned machines do not need lighting to operate. A fully automated, 40-hectare terminal has reported annual cost savings of EUR 65,000 through eliminating lighting alone. The same customer has reported that compensations for work-related injuries were reduced by two-thirds over the past decade after moving to automation.

We provide training and maintenance services that extend the lifespan of equipment, reduce its impact on the environment and ensure safe usage.

Sustainable management of our own operations

We rely on our certified integrated management systems to manage the environmental impacts of our own operations and our compliance with international management system standards – ISO 9001 (process), ISO 14001 (environment), OHSAS 18001 (health and safety) – and other commitments. For example, our multi-assembly unit in Stargard, Poland has received the Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance certification for its integrated management system. Our Technology and Competence Centre in Tampere, Finland, has been awarded global BREEAM certification for best practices in sustainable building design, construction and operation.
